Preparations Before Your Exam

Following these instructions carefully helps ensure your exam produces the most accurate results. If you have any questions, please call us at (305) 455-3000 before your appointment.

Instructions by Exam Type

Preparation requirements differ between PET-CT and CT scans. Please read the instructions for your specific exam carefully.

PET-CT Scan

Positron Emission Tomography + CT Fusion
  • Fast for at least 6 hours before your exam. Do not eat or drink anything except plain water.
  • The day before: Follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet. Avoid bread, pasta, rice, fruit, and sugary foods or drinks.
  • No caffeine on the day of the exam (no coffee, tea, energy drinks).
  • No exercise for 24 hours before your appointment. Avoid any strenuous physical activity.
  • Continue your medications as prescribed unless your doctor instructs otherwise. Take them with plain water only.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your exam to stay hydrated.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid garments with metal zippers, snaps, or underwire.

Diabetic patients: Special preparation instructions apply. Please call us at (305) 455-3000 before your appointment so we can provide specific guidance for your situation.

CT Scan

Computed Tomography
  • CT with IV Contrast: Do not eat solid foods for 4 hours prior. Clear liquids are allowed. Bloodwork (BUN/Creatinine) may be required — ask your doctor.
  • CT with Oral Contrast: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the exam.
  • CT without Contrast: No dietary preparation needed. Take your regular medications as normal.
  • Metformin (Glucophage) users: Contact us before your appointment. You may need to temporarily stop taking Metformin on the day of the exam and for 48 hours after.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal. You may be asked to change into a gown.
  • Known contrast allergies? Inform us when booking. Pre-medication may be required.

General Tips for All Exams

Arrive 15 minutes early to complete any paperwork.
Bring your photo ID and insurance card.
Bring your physician's referral/order for the exam.
Bring any previous imaging (CDs or films) related to your condition.
Leave jewelry at home or be prepared to remove it.
